Designing the Concept
gothic rich purples rainy atmosphere dusk to dawn
The inspiration for the "All The Things I Learned From Ghosts" short story comes from my love for dusty, moody violets and ghost stories. Back in the fall of 2020, after what felt like a century living in the times of the coronavirus pandemic, I had an idea for a story about a ghost who helps a young girl understand the mysteries of life and death. I lost several family members last year, and I was searching for ways to process my grief; I can only imagine there are many others out there who feel the same.
I have a deep love of graphic novels and animated films, so I wanted to try my hand at telling a story with visuals and limited dialogue. The setting of the story is an old victorian home, modeled after my favorite era of architecture, fashion, and history. For the colors of my book I selected only three Risograph inks: purple, sunflower yellow, and black. This limited palette is what brings the setting to life in all its mysterious, moody glory.
